Protecting Your Garden With A Fence

Posted on

For homeowners that enjoy growing plants, a garden can be an important part of their property. Not surprisingly, there can be many pests that may pose a problem for these plants. In particular, pets and other larger animals may be drawn to the garden. In order to keep these animals away from the garden, a fence can be installed.

Consider A Chainlink Fence Option

While a fence can be an excellent option for keeping animals out of your garden, you will want to limit the amount that the fence will interfere with the sunlight that the plants are getting. In this regard, a chainlink fence can be an exceptional option as it will be able to effectively keep animals from entering the garden while also minimizing the amount of shade that is created. For those that prefer wood for garden fences, the height of the fence may be reduced to help limit the shade that it will cast, but you may still want to use plants that enjoy some degree of shade near the perimeter of the garden.

Provide Enough Clearance Between The Fence And The Plants

During the process of designing the fence, you will have to decide on the distance that you want between the plants that are growing and the fence itself. In addition to leaving enough space for the plants to grow, this will also make it easier in the event that repairs are needed for the fence as this space will allow it to be accessed by repair contractors while minimizing the disturbance that the plants experience. At a minimum, you will want to leave at least a couple of feet of clearance, but this may need to be increased for plants that can grow particularly wide.

Install A Secure Gate For The Garden Fence

The gate for your garden fence is a component that can be easy to overlook. However, it can be critical for allowing easy access to the garden while still keeping unwanted animals out of it. When choosing a gate, you should prioritize the quality of the latch that will close it and make sure that it is positioned where an animal will be unable to reach it. Many animals may be able to open the gate if they can reach the latch. Some individuals may underestimate this risk, but raccoons, dogs and many other animals can quickly figure out how to release a latch if they are able to access it.
